EMP5028 - Environmental Noise Monitoring and Assessment

EMP5028 - Environmental Noise Monitoring and Assessment

MQF Level

7

Duration and Credits

Semester 1

5 ECTS

Mode of Study

Part-Time Day

This study-unit will give students a grounding in the basics of noise as well as of the monitoring of noise levels in the environment, with a particular emphasis on the prevention or reduction of the health impact on humans. Students following this unit will learn how to use and interpret the measurements recorded by noise level meters. Additionally the students will learn how to plan different monitoring campaigns aimed at the measurement and assessment of noise levels from a variety of sources, according to international standards.

Study-unit Aims

  • To explain the fundamentals of acoustics;
  • To explain how a noise level meter works and help students understand the difference between class 1 and class 2 noise level meters;
  • To train the students in the gathering of in situ noise data, from different sources;
  • To train the students in the planning of a noise monitoring campaign;
  • To expose the students to the analysis and assessment of the data gathered by noise level meters.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Explain the basic acoustical concepts;
  • Recognise how a noise level meter works;
  • Set up the necessary instrumentation for an environmental noise monitoring campaign, keeping in mind the relevant environmental conditions;
  • Relate the impact of noise levels to human health.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the planning of an effective noise monitoring campaign, depending on the type and source of the noise being measured;
  • Analyse and interpret the interpret environmental noise data gathered from the field;
  • Disseminate effectively advanced concepts related to the gathering of environmental noise data, its interpretation and implications;
  • Appraise noise monitoring studies.

Micro-credentials offer the possibility of providing flexible learning pathways to respond to evolving needs and new developments, thus enabling students to tailor their studies to their needs. Micro-credentials may be combined or transferred into larger credentials, such as certificates, diplomas and degrees, provided that the relevant programme requirements are met. Applicants wishing to transfer micro-credentials to a programme of study are encouraged to seek the advice of the relevant academic entity.
